The First Responders

Good morning

Scripture reading: Luke 10:25-37

Worship song: I Will Say of The Lord

Meditation:

The story of the Good Samaritan demonstrates the responsibility of first responders. First responders are recognized as those who positively impact the lives of others by rendering assistance using their skills and emergency techniques. Their responsibility is to assess the situation, provide initial assistance to victims, and ensure safety for themselves and others. They are usually the first to arrive at an emergency scene. The good Samaritan, however, was not the first to arrive on the scene but the only one who responded to the wounded man by rendering aid. His love for the wounded was demonstrated through his compassion, care, and monetary contribution towards his medical treatment. We are ambassadors for Christ; therefore, we are first responders to the needs of others. We are to avail ourselves to pray, render assistance, and help the needy whenever the need arises, be it financially, physically, or spiritually. Jesus told the disciples that the poor will always be among us. The poor are those who have financial, physical, and spiritual needs.

Like Jesus, you may be criticized for getting involved in meeting the needs of others. People may tell you that you are wasting your time, that you can’t make a difference, that you aren’t qualified to help, that it is not any of your business, or that someone is just too far gone, like the man who appeared to be dead. But first responders close their ears to critics when a need is present because of their love for God and love for their fellow man. If you can help, do not turn the other way; be a first responder for Christ and help whenever you can. Even a simple word of encouragement makes a vast difference in the ears of the destitute.

Let us pray:

Almighty God, you are excellent in all your ways; you are good, and your mercies endure forever, and that's why I sing praises to you, O God. Loving Father, sometimes we turn a blind eye to the needs of the poor and helpless, ignoring their plea for help, but I pray, O Lord, that you will fill our hearts with mercy and compassion, one for another. We recognized, O God, the deceptive schemes that are widespread, and because of this, people refuse to help others. Lord, we therefore ask you to equip us with the spirit of discernment to make the right decisions when the need arises lest we fall victim to betrayal. Father, please open our eyes to see the needs of the needy so we can render assistance promptly. Almighty God, as first responders for Jesus Christ, may we be effectual, efficient, fervent, and resilient as we carry out the mandate that you have assigned us. Lord, we beseech you to strengthen our weakness and help us live a purpose-filled life according to your will through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Shalom.
