Anything Gained in Sin Is Vanity

Good morning

Scripture reading: Ecclesiastes 1-2

Hymn: At Calvary

Meditation:

Solomon’s experience proves that pursuing worldly success and self-gratification leads to a sense of profound emptiness, proving that true purpose is not found in material possessions. He discovered that, apart from God, all human accomplishments and pleasures are vanity, leaving the soul empty, detached from its true purpose. As he reflected on his earthly possessions, he was able to testify that all his gain was vanity and vexation of spirit.

Jesus told the parable of the rich fool in St. Luke 12, who purposed in his heart to build bigger barns to store his riches to last him many more years, but he never thought about securing his soul. While many of us relentlessly pursue an extravagant lifestyle and are laboring hard to accomplish these desires, it is worth pausing to consider if this intense labor is truly fulfilling, or simply in vain.

Reflecting on Solomon's testimony and the parable of the rich fool should prompt us to obey the mandate in St. Matthew 6:33 to seek the Kingdom of God and all his righteousness, first and foremost. The question that Jesus asked and is still asking us today is: What shall it profit us if we gain the whole world and lose our own soul? Or what shall we give in exchange for our souls? Worldly success is temporary, but the soul is eternal.

Let us pray.

Sovereign God, I give thanks, O God, for your word that reminds us that anything gained outside of Christ is vanity and vexation of spirit. Almighty God, I am grateful for your boundless grace, countless mercies, unmerited favor, and the steadfast love you have extended to us. Lord, with a grateful heart, I give thanks that you have saved us from a life spent in vanity and pride. Thank you, Lord, for the light that excels in darkness, bringing us to a place where our soul is satisfied with the fatness of your goodness. Almighty God, may I never depart from this newfound life in Christ. Draw me closer to you, O God, and never let me depart from your presence. Bind my heart to Yours, O God, in permanent fellowship. Go before me, O God as I avail myself to be used for your glory. Lord, be my light, be my guide, and anchor my soul on Jesus Christ, the solid rock. Amen.

Wishing you a peaceful day. ✌💪🙏

  1. While we are blessed with talents and abilities to attain success in life, our spiritual life must not be robbed but equally balanced but often times it is not so. We should therefore do everything to let God be glorified, praise and pleased. Blessings. 🙏🙏
